“Would you mind if I contact my scientists, so they might assist you in finding our landing site?”

Caesar huffed. “Do you think they are capable of providing any real help in this matter?”

“I am quite certain of it. These are brilliant scientists, even the kids.”

“Hold on! I don’t want the kids involved.”

“That’s not your say, Caesar. It’s mine. It is also my responsibility to ensure they behave. But when they give an excellent suggestion, and the other scientist and I agree, you will follow it. Treat them like adult crew members, because they are the reason we will succeed.”

“More likely the reason we will fail,” Drake grumbled.

“Just give them a chance, Caesar,” Lancaster softly, yet sternly, requested.

“All right, but on one condition. Stop calling me Caesar. You can call me Captain. You can call me Drake. You can even call me Captain Drake.”

Lancaster chuckled. “Drake it is. Now will you please open the com, so I can talk to my entire crew?”

“If you say ‘please’ to the kids, they are going to have you for lunch,” Drake warned.

“You’re going to have to share with me what sent you over the edge on teens. But right now, just open the com and prepare to be astounded.”

“I bet you a day’s ration of water they’ll be in hysterics,” Drake warned.

Luke Gallagher studied the wreckage and site photos as he walked the sharp turn in the road that Carla Simon’s car hadn’t made. Pointing to the tire marks on the road, he said to the police chief beside him, “Could you ask your photographer to get clear shots of these tracks and those about a hundred yards ahead?”

The police chief gave the order and turned back to the FBI agent. “You think she might have been run off the road?”

Luke chewed his lower lip. It was always a hazy line when cooperating with law-enforcement officials outside his jurisdiction, and this time, he was way out of his jurisdiction. How much to tell and how much to withhold? “It’s a possibility. Ms. Simon’s books were controversial.” He thought about the death threats Simon’s editor had showed him. They were probably cranks, but he’d still have to check them out. He’d also need to investigate the people who had sued her, claiming she had damaged their lives by revealing their private secrets. And he’d have to talk with people at the Temple. Still his most likely suspect was here in New Zealand.

When going through Ms. Simon’s house for leads to those who might have wanted her dead, he’d discovered her latest novel on her computer. He had read it on his way over here. He’d found it a fascinating exposé on the materialistic nature of sports heroes and their corrupt managers. The focus of her research had obviously been Chad Tyler, renamed in her book as Jeremiah Taylor. While she might have altered his name, she had described him and the Cowboys to a tee. There would be no doubt to any reader who the subject of her book was. If this novel was as accurate as her prior ones, then his favorite quarterback was wandering into some very shady deals.

When Luke had received the manifest and discovered Chad Tyler and Carla Simon had sat next to each other on the plane to New Zealand, he moved the fellow up to the top of his suspect list. Had she let slip that he was the focus of her next book, or had he been alerted as her research was collected and joined her on the plane intentionally? Perhaps he’d come planning a last attempt to persuade her not to publish his book? An attempt that failed and led to murder?

Those who do not follow the Path of Light would prefer to kill all the non-human sentient beings before they are even aware they are under attack.

 Matters turn bleak for the Path of Light when Sojourn’s ship crash-lands on Terranue before their journey even begins.

Something moved in Sojourn’s dinner of rehydrated protein-and-vegetable stew. He poked at it with his spoon and a green head the size of his thumb rose above the brown goo and clamped down on the utensil, tearing at it with its rows of needle-sharp teeth.

His shipmates farther down the stainless steel dining table roared with raucous laughter. One of them must have found the vicious creature on Alpha 201, the planet they just left.

Everyone had been hoping for a bonus, which they got whenever a colony survived a full year. Unfortunately, not a single person remained on the planet. Evidently, the crew decided to take out their frustration on the newest crewmember.

“Funny, real funny,” he declared, tempted to toss his spoon with the attached Gila worm down the table, but that would get him in trouble…again. Instead, he carried his bowl over to the barely functioning recycling unit and poured the contents down the hole.

He’d probably catch hell for throwing a non-degradable spoon away, but no way was he going to risk a potentially lethal bite just to save one slightly warped eating utensil.

The recycling unit groaned and shivered as if it didn’t feel like working today, or maybe it didn’t like Gila worms either. The brown sludge and Gila worm had just disappeared when Captain Longfellow’s voice barked from the ship’s communication system.

“Sojourn to the bridge!”

Old man Thomas, no doubt the idiot who had brought the Gila aboard, smirked and leaned back in his chair. “Was that the brig or bridge?”

Charles, playing cards at the end of the table with Drogan, paused in his game. “It’d save time if he let you head to the brig straight off.”

Everyone laughed but Drogan. Still, the blue-skinned, gilled Oceanic had to be relieved not to be the target of their torment for once. The morons of this crew constantly told him fish jokes, which no doubt made the fellow wish he’d never left his water planet.

Sometimes these jerks made Sojourn wish he’d never left Terranue, but in his case he’d had no choice. According to a prophecy, if he didn’t leave, the colonists would blame him for some terrible plague that was coming.
