Unexpected Love by Liza O'Connor

MEET THREE STRONG WOMEN
Who are willing to do anything,
 include taking on the Mafia,
to preserve the last White Oak Forest in Iowa.

Helen has lived and protected the property for most of her long life, but she’s dying and needs to find a new caretaker. Her Mafia crazed sons wish to raze down the forest to make themselves billionaires. She locates an avid hiker in New Jersey with the love and money to take over the woods.

Megan is convinced her lottery win came with a curse. The day she receives Helen’s offer to buy her woods she also learns a serial killer has her in his sight, so she changes her identity, moves to Iowa, and buys Helen’s forest. While the Mafia Don, Benito Campinelli, would not order a hit on his own mother, Megan is fair game.

Tess, the granddaughter of Helen, has lived with her grams since her father tried to force her to marry a Chicago Mafia Don when she turned sixteen. Under Grams’ guidance, she learned how to care for the forest. To protect Tess from being forced to sell the lands to her father, Megan turned the lands into a State Park with the caveat that Tess will become the forest manager once she gets her Master’s degree. Until then, she will assist the person in charge.

To celebrate the arrival of book two of the White Oaks – Mafia series

Megan Clarke had a good life until she wins the Mega Times Lottery and discovers the prize comes with a curse. Worse than the many money-hungry suitors, a serial killer has her in his sight. She changes her name and moves to Iowa with plans to buy their last major forest of white oaks and turn it into a State Park.
Unfortunately, the Lottery Curse doesn't stop at state lines and someone there wants her dead, as well. Good thing a disturbingly handsome law officer is just as determined to keep her alive.

Excerpt for A Fortune to Die For
Megan realized it was going to be a while before Steve would refocus on the package. “Can I get you something to drink? Green Tea with lemon grass?” He looked health conscious. Actually, he looked like a movie star with a crew cut.
He glanced up. “Sounds good.” He then glanced around. “Any place I can sit and read these?”
“Seriously? There’s got to be over two hundred letters in there.”
“I know. Which is why I’d prefer to do this sitting down.”
“Okay, but if this package blows up on a timer, I’m going to be grumpy when I reach the afterlife.”
He chuckled at her warning, set down the letter he was reading, and picked up the package. “If I open this in the next room, will you be safe from blasts?”
“The room is steel-lined, so I think so. But wouldn’t you rather have some sort of robot handle the matter?”
His adorable grin returned. “Oddly, we don’t have one of those.”
“I could buy you one… You could just take the package somewhere safe and leave it unopened until the robot arrives. I have no problem donating the money to get you guys a bomb robot, given this probably won’t be the last time I need one.”
He studied her a long moment before replying. “You know how I got to be a detective so early in life?”
She almost replied that good-looking people lived a charmed life and received promotions more often than less attractive people, but realized he wouldn’t appreciate her observation. So she behaved and answered, “No.”
“I’ve very good instincts. For example, before you replied, you were thinking something…something I wouldn’t like, so you wisely kept it to yourself.”
Her face burned. Busted! “And your instincts tell you the package is safe?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Then take it in the other room and open it.”
Despite his confidence in his instincts, Megan remained on pins and needles for the excruciatingly long half-hour that crawled by as she waited for Detective Williams to return.
Or blow up.

Book 2 has released!
Contemporary Suspense/Sweet Romance

Blurb
Tess Campbell is a mafia princess who wants nothing to do with her dangerous family. She’d rather spend her life making Grams's forest the best state park in Iowa.
Alistair Castile, aka Steel, is a British prince, his archeological career in ruins due to his promiscuous nature. He’s hired on as forest manager of Tess’s woods and quickly falls in love with the charming young woman, so different from the socialites of his world.
Only there are several serious barriers between them: Steel’s career cannot withstand another scandal and Tess’s father will kill anyone who gets in the way of his daughter marrying a Chicago mobster.

Excerpt for Unexpected Love
Tess Campbell hugged her grandmother as the newly appointed governor signed the document to make the two-hundred-thousand acres a state park.
“We did it!”
“With the help of God and Meg, we did,” the old woman said. “For a while, I feared all I’d done was get an innocent woman killed for trying to help us. I underestimated our family’s hunger for power and money. Thankfully, the FBI didn’t.”
The phone rang. “I’ll get it.” Tess jumped from the couch and hurried to the wall phone by the kitchen. “Hello?”
“May I speak to Tess Campbell, please?”
“This is she.”
“Tess, It’s Tom Barkman.”
The head of the Park’s Commission, now her new boss. “Mr. Barkman, I just saw the land transfer went through.”
“Yes, that was a great relief. Unfortunately, it appears we are now in lockdown and not allowed to leave. Could you do me a favor and pick up Dr. Castile from the airport at six this evening? He’s coming on British Airways from Cairo.”
“Of course. Where do you need me to take him?”
“This is a bit awkward, but he’s my first choice as forest manager for your land. I had intended to take him to my house and bring him over to you in the morning. I’ve explained the situation to him.”
“That I’ll be taking his job in five years?”
“Yes. To be honest, that was a deal breaker for most of the candidates I’ve considered. However, Steel has long-term plans in a different direction, so he’s open to a short-term offer.”
“Well, I’ll do my best to convince him to take the job.”
“Just give him the same tour you did me. And, if it’s not too much of an inconvenience, could you possibly take him to a hotel nearby?”
“We’ve plenty of room here, and this is just what we need to keep our minds on our achievements instead of the problems.”
“Ah. I imagine your family is a bit upset.”
“Well, they haven’t come by, but I expect they are as angry as I am thrilled that we saved the last forest in Iowa.”
“They wouldn’t shoot Steel, would they?” he asked.
She grimaced. “No, but I’ll do my best to ensure they don’t meet him.”

Birth of Adam
by
Liza O'Connor

With a new identity, Amanda believes she has left her past behind. Then she acquires a stalker. She contacts the FBI and in doing so alerts a program she once created to her location. Now ensconced in the internet, the program is safe from harm, smarter than ever, and sentient. Presenting itself on her phone as a handsome face with a sexy British accent, “Adam” ingratiates himself into Amanda’s life. To ensure her safety and happiness, the sentient program proves there is absolutely nothing he can’t and won’t do.

EXCERPT
What was Adam saying? Luke was here! Yet the man before her seemed more like the old Luke, not the anguished man who had recently come to her aid. She burst into tears as she realized how hard he would have taken his failure to protect her. The Luke before her pulled her into his arms and she sobbed onto his chest. But if Luke is dead, who is this?
“It is me, love. It’s only a machine, but the finest that current technologies can make. I gave it Luke’s face, to honor him, and to prevent his life from ending in a valley of disgrace he did not deserve. You do not mind, do you?”
Mind? It’s more than I could have ever hoped would come out of such a tragedy. You have saved Luke’s name and given me what I’ve dreamed of, all in one swoop.
“Well, you will have a chance to give honor to Luke’s body as well. You require organ transplants. His heart, kidneys and liver will give you back your life. So in the end, he does not die. I will continue his name and good deeds, and you will carry his heart within you.”
His statement stunned her. She could see the worry in his face. He was probably breaking a thousand laws by ensuring she received Luke’s organs, but she knew Luke would want this. She knew it would give him peace to save her body, and she knew without a doubt there was no one better to represent Luke in life than Adam.
She stroked his cheek, and it felt exactly like flesh, including the hint of stubble. Her fingers caressed the warm, moist flesh of his lips, and he playfully nipped her fingers.
How did you create this in so little time?
“I have been working on this body since the first time you wished I could hold you. Changing the face in a single week was a challenge, but the changes were superficial. The underlying complex technology remained the same. Adam’s face and this face are not terribly different.”
Can you eat?
“I can,” he replied.
She gently pushed his teeth apart and stared inside at what appeared to be a normal mouth, fillings and all.
Can you kiss me?
“I can, but I want us to wait until you have fully acclimated to this change,” he stated. “And until you are strong enough to risk the pleasure of kisses. Your heart is very weak, Amanda. I will not risk losing you. To be honest, I was terrified that even the news of Luke’s death would kill you.”
Then why did you risk it?
“Because I had no choice. I could not proceed without your approval. I would not place Luke’s heart in your chest unless you agreed. I would not continue his life without you at my side.”
I love you, and I’m sure, wherever Luke is, that he loves you too.

Public Secrets by Liza O'Connor (Bk 1 of 2 bk Artificial Intelligence series)

What happens when an AI programs turns everything you write into the TRUTH.

People want to kill you.

Public Secrets

Book 1 of AI Series

Carla Simon is a best-selling novelist besieged by death threats and lawsuits because her stories keep turning out to be true. She is considered an extraordinary researcher, uncovering facts unknown by field experts.
The truth is far simpler and more disturbing. Carla has a software program that “fixes” her mistakes and rewrites her novels so they are error-proof both in presentation and in content. The result is beautifully written and completely accurate stories about real people and events.
Some of those people want her silenced forever. When a woman, mistaken for Carla, turns up dead in New Zealand, she must face the hard truth about her program. But first she has to survive the assassin who has never failed to deliver on a contract.

Excerpt
Luke Gallagher studied the wreckage and site photos as he walked the sharp turn in the road that Carla Simon’s car hadn’t made. Pointing to the tire marks on the road, he said to the police chief beside him, “Could you ask your photographer to get clear shots of these tracks and those about a hundred yards ahead?”

The police chief gave the order and turned back to the FBI agent. “You think she might have been run off the road?”
Luke chewed his lower lip. It was always a hazy line when cooperating with law-enforcement officials outside his jurisdiction, and this time, he was way out of his jurisdiction. How much to tell and how much to withhold? “It’s a possibility. Ms. Simon’s books were controversial.” He thought about the death threats Simon’s editor had showed him. They were probably cranks, but he’d still have to check them out. He’d also need to investigate the people who had sued her, claiming she had damaged their lives by revealing their private secrets. And he’d have to talk with people at the Temple. Still his most likely suspect was here in New Zealand.

When going through Ms. Simon’s house for leads to those who might have wanted her dead, he’d discovered her latest novel on her computer. He had read it on his way over here. He’d found it a fascinating exposé on the materialistic nature of sports heroes and their corrupt managers. The focus of her research had obviously been Chad Tyler, renamed in her book as Jeremiah Taylor. While she might have altered his name, she had described him and the Cowboys to a tee. There would be no doubt to any reader who the subject of her book was. If this novel was as accurate as her prior ones, then his favorite quarterback was wandering into some very shady deals.

When Luke had received the manifest and discovered Chad Tyler and Carla Simon had sat next to each other on the plane to New Zealand, he moved the fellow up to the top of his suspect list. Had she let slip that he was the focus of her next book, or had he been alerted as her research was collected and joined her on the plane intentionally? Perhaps he’d come planning a last attempt to persuade her not to publish his book? An attempt that failed and led to murder?

A FORTUNE TO DIE FOR
Book 1 of The White Oak-Mafia Series
AUTHOR: Liza O’Connor
GENRE:  Contemporary Mafia Suspense Thiller (with touches of humor)

Megan Clarke had a good life until she wins the Mega Times Lottery and discovers the prize comes with a curse. Worse than the many money-hungry suitors, a serial killer has her in his sight. She changes her name and moves to Iowa with plans to buy their last major forest of white oaks and turn it into a State Park. Unfortunately, the Lottery Curse doesn't stop at state lines and someone there wants her dead, as well. Good thing a disturbingly handsome law officer is just as determined to keep her alive.

Megan Clarke set the package on her kitchen counter with great care. “It’s probably nothing,” she chided herself. Opening a letter that came in the same mail delivery, she changed her mind as she read another threat to kill her. She hurried to the phone and hit her speed dial for the local cops. Her hands shook despite her mental self-assurances that everything was okay.
A female voice answered the phone. “Danville Police.”

Recognizing Margaret’s voice, she replied, “Hi, this is Megan. Is Sergeant Adams around?”

“No, he’s on vacation. You get another death threat?”

“Yeah, but there’s also a package. I know it’s stupid, but I’m afraid to open it.”

A heavy sigh sounded over the phone. “I swear, all your troubles since you won the lottery has made me afraid to even play scratch-offs. Hold on.”

Megan pushed her blond hair behind her ears. The craziest part about her winning the Mega Times Lottery was she never played games of chance—thought it a great waste of money. She had already become a millionaire by her own efforts. Why did she want to be richer? She had more than enough.

Then one day, while in a New York shop buying lunch, her friend, Terry, a bona fide lottery junkie, had insisted she buy a ticket. “It only cost a dollar. Stop being a miser!”

Not wishing to argue, she passed the clerk a dollar. “Just give me a random number,” she instructed the fellow, then frowned as her friend filled out ten cards. “You do realize if I win, you have to take the money,” Megan warned.

Terry stared at her with rounded eyes. “No way! You can’t give away your good luck. If you win it, you have to keep it. Otherwise, you and the recipient will have bad luck the rest of your lives.”

So when the stupid ticket turned out to be the only winning number for a $987-million-dollar pot, all the bad luck stayed with her alone. Honestly, she wouldn’t wish her “new” life on a dog, nevertheless her best friend.

Since she was a financial expert, she took the $463 million upfront and invested half of it, planning to donate the other half to charities. Only problem was, whenever she delved into various charities, she didn’t like the way they used their money, so thus far, she’d only managed to give away a few million.

“Miss Clarke, I’m Detective Steve Williams,” a pleasant voice came over the phone. “How may I help you?”

“I received a package today. It has a name and address I don’t recognize.”

Complete silence answered her.

“Are you still there?”

“Yes, ma’am. I’m just a little confused. Marge said you had a letter threatening your life.”

“Yes. I have one of those, too. It doesn’t have a return address. Nor is it signed. But the letter and the package came in the same post.”

“So you think the package may be from the sender of the death threat?”

“This one or one of the hundred other angry letters I’ve received.”

“Mind if I stop by and take a look?”

Mind? Why did he think she was calling? If only Sergeant Adams were there. “I’d greatly appreciate it.”

Liza O’Connor was raised badly by feral cats, left the South/Midwest and wandered off to find nicer people on the east coast. There she worked for the meanest man on Wall Street while her psychotic husband tried to kill her three times. (So much for finding nicer people.) Then one day she declared enough, got a better job, divorced her husband, and fell in love with her new life where people behaved nicely. But all those bad behaviors has given her lots of fodder for her humorous books. Please buy these books, because otherwise, she’ll become grumpy and write troubled novels instead. They will likely traumatize you.

You have been warned.

We'll move on to Are there bears in Iowa? Not only do I answer that, I then compare the non-existent bears in Iowa to those in NJ in the next blog To prove my idiocy, I share the time I flew the bird at a real mafia thug.  (NJ has lots of them) And finally, to increase your vocabulary, I share some Mafia Lingo.

LIZA O'CONNOR

When the pot has too many cooks a feast can be ruined, and that’s exactly what happens with Xavier and Vic’s new cases. Each proves more complicated than initially thought with criminals dropping out of the sky, wreaking havoc upon Xavier, Vic, and their excellent employees. By the end, Vic threatens to open a school that teaches criminals how to stay out of each other’s way.

Worse yet, a treasured member of the staff is shot in the heart while attempting to save Vic and the Queen’s cousin.

“Everyone, to the tree now,” he insisted, wishing he had Xavier’s ability to boss people around. When he was a pirate, he had no problems getting his crew to do as he asked. If they didn’t, he’d just shoot them and toss their body overboard, but that was a different time in his life and he had different standards. For a pirate, he was considered a great captain to ship with. Now he had an ambiguous position. While he was the ‘master’ of the big house, Alice actually managed the farmers.

“Now!” he snapped, using his captain’s voice.

Startled, the men moved to the tree.

Jacko opened both doors. As he set up the camera, he cursed the dimness still enveloping Daisy’s body. He had very little chance of capturing any details.

Just as he was about to give up this endeavor, a beam of sunshine came through the doors and pierced the darkness surrounding her body.

He managed to take three pictures before the farmers rushed inside.

“God Almighty! What was done to the poor girl?”

“Looks like something ripped her throat out.”

“But what could do that?”

Frederick spoke from the door. “I’ll tell you what it was. It’s the werewolf. It killed my Daisy and if we don’t send it back to hell, it’s going to slaughter us all.”

Not one farmer seemed to think his accusation ridiculous. In fact, they insisted they should go at once and hunt the creature down.
